Student-Athletes of the Week for September 25, 2017
Date: 10/06/2017

Athletes of the WeekCongratulations to Diego Escalante ’20 and Kennedy Opie ’19 for receiving Cardigan’s Athlete of the Week Award. Read what their coaches have to say about them below, and meet all the students who were nominated.

Varsity Student-Athlete of the Week

Diego Escalante – Varsity Cross Country
Diego has been a kind and inclusive teammate since day one. He is a top runner, but he is never too prideful and loves to spend time with all members of the team. Diego works hard during technique drills and always asks questions to be sure that he is doing the exercises correctly. He is very interested in learning how to improve his speed and works at it every day. Diego helps to carry team equipment at the end of almost every practice without being asked. He ran an incredible race on Wednesday against high school runners from Holderness, Brewster, KUA, Vermont Academy, White Mountain School, New Hampton, and Proctor, placing third overall and first for Cardigan. Diego has been an excellent addition to our team.
Sub-Varsity Student-Athlete of the Week

Kennedy Opie – JV Soccer
Kennedy played every minute of each game in the recent jamboree and against Eaglebrook. He even finished the Eaglebrook game after sustaining a bloody nose due to a collision with an opponent. He made several outstanding saves and was a leader for the defense. Great work Kennedy!
Other Varsity Nominations

Hector Flores Moya – Varsity Mountain Biking
Hector began the season in a subdued fashion but quickly emerged as a legitimate varsity rider. In practice, he showed significant gains in cardiovascular power and in speed. His determination and toughness impressed the coaches and his teammates. At the team's first race at Proctor, with more than 260 riders in the field, Hector pedaled to a fourth place finish in the C class. His enthusiasm, friendliness, and dogged determination made him an awesome team member and competitor this week.
Will Brannan - Varsity Football
Will has been an excellent leader for our football team in the opening weeks. He pays attention to detail, works extremely hard, and is finding success on the team. He is a tremendous, experienced linebacker on defense. Will also puts his mark on the game at the offensive line clearing holes for our backs and protecting the quarterback. In our first two scrimmages, Will has been a standout player for the team.
Kade Goldberg- Varsity Soccer
Kade is in his second year on the Varsity Team and was recently selected as team captain. In our first four games, Kade has been extremely versatile and instrumental in his play, supporting and leading us to three victories. He has amassed several points through both goals and assists, but his most important point was the game-winning goal against Eaglebrook this past weekend. While naturally a forward, he subbed in on more than one occasion as a defender to help the team out in injury situations. He has taken on the role of team captain confidently and with appropriate seriousness.
Other Sub-Varsity Nominations

Oscar Wang – JV Mountain Biking
Oscar has been an outstanding rider on our trails. He has led both time trials, helped teammates learn the new features, and has been a leader in team spirit. He will have his first chance to show how fast he is on Wednesday at Vermont Academy while leading the JV Mountain Biking team!
Declan Clark – Rock Climbing
Declan has worked hard to be a safe member of the squad, he supports his teammates constantly, and is improving quickly this fall. He pushes himself to his limit and beyond in the Cave, where he is not afraid to challenge himself to improve. He is a positive role model for the inexperienced climbers in the program.
Tony Carrandi - Fourths Soccer
Tony has started off the season on a great note, bringing positive energy, effort, and attitude to the team. He always gives 100% and has stepped up to be a great leader and role model as a new student and a new member of the team. We look forward to the rest of the year with such a valuable player!
Will Hindle - JV Football
Will has done a fantastic job both leading the team and learning the offense. He is always positive, enjoys practice, and works hard at every drill. Keep up the good work!
Masamune Enomoto – JV Cross Country
Masamune was nominated because of his positive attitude and incredible determination during practices and races. He is a great leader and example to everyone else on the team!
Joe Roberts – Thirds Mountain Biking
Joe has been pushing himself and his teammates on and off the trails to improve every day. He has been focusing on his technical skills, and has been helping motivate his teammates.
Gary Huang – Thirds Soccer
Gary’s sportsmanship and enthusiasm have earned him this nomination. He is a quiet but consistent presence, and brings energy, positivity, and joy to the game. His example improves the team experience each day. He plays with class and passion, which are two key criteria for a Cardigan Cougar. Keep up the good work, Gary!
