Cardigan’s 2018 Opening Ceremony
Date: 09/14/2018

Opening CeremonyOn Saturday, September 8, 2018, the Cardigan Mountain School community came together to officially begin the new academic year. The Opening Ceremony is the first formal gathering of students, faculty, and staff, as well as our first time assembling in the chapel. It is a celebration of another year living the Cardigan Way, and a recognition that we are part of something greater than ourselves.

School Leader Macsen Elkouh ’19 began the ceremony by sharing the School Mission, stating that Cardigan “prepares middle school boys—in mind, body, and spirit—for responsible and meaningful lives in a global society.” Senior Leaders Jimmy Wu, Cam Cyr, Jadon Perez, and Tony Carrandi then read and defined each of our Core Values: Compassion, Integrity, Respect, and Courage. These are the tenets of our community that shape and inform everything we do and are integrated into our daily life.

Opening CeremonyDirector of Student Life Nick Nowak introduced keynote speaker and Director of Spiritual Life Cheryl Borek P’10,’12,’15, saying that she “exemplifies leadership by example… with humility and grace, and I am grateful to have her as a role model for all of us.” In her address, Ms. Borek introduced “The Courageous Heart” as the new community theme for the year. As the first of our Core Values, courage requires us to remain strong and steadfast during moments of adversity. “Courage does not look the same for everyone but I believe everyone possesses courage,” she said.

Head of School Chris Day P’12,’13 spoke next and asked that we set a goal to make our community as welcoming as possible, and wished that we all have a year filled with learning and growth. Director of Music Kevin Franco then led us in singing the Cardigan Hymn for the first time this year.

When the ceremony concluded, students were encouraged to go forth and live by our Core Values, and have a great start to our new academic year.
