Athletes of the Week for October 1, 2018
Date: 10/05/2018

Athletes of the WeekCongratulations to Will Hindle ’19 and Wil Castillo Topete ’20 for receiving Cardigan’s Athlete of the Week Award. Read what their coaches have to say about them below, and meet all the students who were nominated.

Varsity Student-Athlete of the Week

Will Hindle ’19 – Varsity Football
Will had an excellent five-touchdown performance against St. Paul’s last Saturday. Also, he is an invaluable member of the defense. More importantly, I was impressed by Will's leadership ability during the game. He stayed cool, calm, and collected when his teammates missed their assignments and made the best out of every play. I never once witnessed him lash out at a teammate. Although being a leader is new for Will, his performance at St. Paul’s brings me to believe that his leadership ability will continue to grow as the season progresses.

Sub-Varsity Student-Athlete of the Week

Wil Castillo Topete ’20 – JV Mountain Biking
Wil has been a rock star on the JV Mountain Biking Team. He finished 27th in his first race and beat multiple members of the varsity team. Every day in practice he rides as fast as can to be first. He will continue to work on his skills outside of practice and has been an awesome teammate for the JV program.

Other Varsity Nominations

Hugh Jung ’20 – Varsity Soccer
Hugh is a first-year member of the team. He plays both center and wing midfield comfortably with a fantastic work rate. He is a skilled player with excellent speed and is relied upon for close marking and quick counter-attacking play. This past week he served the team valuably as a hard-working marking midfielder, controlling the flow of Fessenden's play and then getting the team forward to attack goal. In our game against Deerfield, Hugh was dogged in his pursuit of the opponent's midfield and even set up our final goal to put the game away.

AJ Noel ’19 – Varsity Mountain Biking
AJ was named Co-Captain of the team, and he finished second in the B class in our opening race at Proctor, riding against 78 high school cyclists. Also, he won the B race at Cardigan, beating a field of 40 high school riders. He will be promoted to the A classification for our next race. Only five cyclists in CMS history have competed in the A class; AJ, through his hard work, skill, and self-motivation, joins this elite level.
Jay Lee '19 – Varsity Cross Country
Racing on one of the toughest courses in the schedule, Jay Lee ran hard while battling illness. Even though he was hurting, Jay never gave up and finished the race strong. Also, Jay supported Jerry Wang through the entire race and pushed Jerry to a strong finish and a great time. He embodied Cardigan's Core Values, and he did so while facing both internal and external adversity.

Other Sub-Varsity Nominations

Santiago Parra Garcia ’21 – Fourths Soccer
Santiago scored two goals in our game Saturday and, the way he was playing, could have easily scored more. He quietly gives every practice and game his all and is always striving to get better. He is a good teammate and a very good soccer player.
Eric Roachford ’20 – JV Cross Country
Eric ran an incredible race on Saturday taking second place for the cougars and has been putting forward exemplary effort during practice and workouts.
Junkai (Tiger) Yang ’22 – Thirds Mountain Biking
Tiger is nominated for his courageous heart in mountain biking. He has made tremendous growth in his quickness and skills; he also exhibits kindness to those around him, supporting and encouraging them to do their best.
Zach Hawthorne ’20 – JV Soccer
Not only did Zach get the shutout in goal against New Hampton this week, he also played for the varsity team against Deerfield and played every minute in goal in a 3-1 victory. This has to be one of the few times, if not only time, a goalkeeper has gotten the win in a JV and Varsity game in the same week. Zach leads by example every day in practice, helps to keep his teammates focused, and puts in his best effort at all times.
Ethan Lo '21 – Reserve Soccer
This week in practice Ethan has been coming early and staying late to work on his skills. He is a solid center-mid for our team and knocked in one of our goals in our 5-0 victory over Lempster this week. He consistently wins sprints in practice. He is a leader on our team and is working hard to improve on his athleticism every day.
Damian Zhu ’21 – JV Football
Damian is new to Cardigan and new to football. In our game this past Wednesday, he entered the game in the second half and made an immediate impact.
Daniel Jung ’21 – Thirds Soccer
Daniel has been a force in the midfield, working hard on both sides of the ball and creating opportunities for the team as a result. In practice and games he has been a leader by example, and he is improving each day. As our offense struggles to score goals, he has remained determined and hungry on the field.
Ben Ely '21 – Sailing
Ben was a rock star captain of Boat #2 during our most recent regatta, where we competed against our team and a group from Burlington. He navigated the rough and ever-changing winds of Canaan St. Lake with a calm demeanor and expertise that landed him first place finishes in all three races. Great work, Ben!
Juno Cowans ’20 – Rock Climbing
Juno has been a positive presence in the Cave all year. He is very coachable, he works diligently, and he has a lot of fun. Juno has demonstrated exemplary climbing skills thus far and is the Rock Climbing Team's selection for student- athlete of the week.
